Qajaq - Kayak

Qajaq - Kayak is an initiative that empowers Inuit to revitalize their traditional ways. The “qajaq” is an Inuit invention that has been used as a means of transportation and livelihood in the Arctic for thousands of years. As a tool to hunt, fish, and travel, the Inuit have been building them out of animal hide and bones, making them solid and sustainable ways to survive and transmit knowledge. Due to the effects of colonialism, the passing on of qajaq knowledge has been weakened. All Arctic is here to ensure that this knowledge stays alive and lives through our people.

Cultural revitalization in practice

Cultural revitalization is a key component towards protecting and promoting traditional epistemologies and ways of knowing. Joanasie Pauyungie, Vilisie Tayara, Mary Pootoo, and Josie Kakayuk were received at All Arctic’s Qajaq - Kayak program to become certified kayak instructors.

Vilisie Tayara and Mary Pooto are the first female Inuit certified by Paddle Canada as kayak instructors.
