Elisapie Isaac, more commonly known as "Elisapie," is not your average Canadian Inuk artist; she's a multi-talented dynamo whose life story is as diverse as her artistic talents. Her journey begins in the picturesque landscapes of Salluit, Nunavik, Quebec, where she spent her enchanting childhood, forever shaped by the mesmerizing beauty of the Arctic. But Elisapie's quest for her own unique voice led her to Montreal in 1999, where she embarked on an adventure into the world of communication, setting her sights on becoming a journalist.
Born in the heart of Salluit, Quebec, Elisapie's heritage is a tapestry of Inuit culture and the rugged charm of Newfoundland, courtesy of her parents. At the age of twelve, her musical gifts were already evident when she joined forces with the Salluit band Sugluk, igniting a creative spark that would eventually blaze into an amazing career.
In a captivating musical odyssey, Elisapie collaborated with the instrumentalist Alain Auger, giving birth to the transcendent project known as Taima. The name, derived from the Inuktitut language, means "that's all" or "it is done." Their resonating masterpiece, the eponymous album "Taima," not only captured hearts but also earned the prestigious Juno Award for Aboriginal Recording of the Year in 2005.
But Elisapie's artistry extends beyond music. In 2006, she lent her lyrical prowess to songs composed by Bruno Coulais for the film, "The White Planet." Her creative spirit knows no bounds, and she fearlessly explores new territories.
In 2010, Elisapie unveiled her debut solo album, "There Will Be Stars," through Pheromone Recordings. With an eclectic blend of English, French, and Inuktitut, she masterfully weaves a tapestry of languages, creating an auditory masterpiece that transcends borders. Her second solo endeavor, "Travelling Love," emerged in October 2012 under her stage name, Elisapie, and showcased her boundless talent.
Her accolades continue to pile up, with a nomination for the Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song at the 2nd Canadian Screen Awards for her evocative composition, "Far Away," featured in the captivating film, "The Legend of Sarila." In 2019, she was once again in the spotlight, nominated for the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year for "The Ballad of the Runaway Girl." Her music, like her heritage, is a mosaic of languages and cultures, a testament to the harmonious fusion of human experiences.
Elisapie Isaac is not just a musical sensation but also a media maven. Her profound love for communication and radio has allowed her to express her inner creativity in ways that go beyond music. As she puts it, "I really believe that communication and radio was really a place for me to express my inner creativity, and I love that medium. And it has helped me to be a little more aware, especially when I have to be doing interviews and have a larger vision of my work than just the artiste point of view."
In 2021, Elisapie expanded her horizons even further by venturing into the realm of acting. She was cast in C.S. Roy's highly anticipated augmented reality film, "V F C," marking her inaugural foray into the world of cinema and promising yet another exciting chapter in her ever-evolving narrative.
